The Problem With Paid-Only
This plumbing company was spending thousands every month on Google Ads. And it was working — sort of. They were getting leads. But every month started at zero. Turn off the ads, and the phone stops ringing. That’s not a growth strategy. That’s a treadmill.
Organically? Their average Google position was 40. They were on page 4 for their most important keywords. If someone searched “plumber near me” in their city, they didn’t exist.
The Strategy
We needed to build a second pipeline — one that worked alongside their paid campaigns but didn’t cost more every time they wanted more leads. Here’s what our SEO strategy was.
Phase 1: Foundation (Months 1–3)
- Technical audit and fixes. Site speed optimization.
- Schema markup.
- Google Business Profile overhaul.
- Core service pages rewritten from scratch with proper keyword targeting.
Phase 2: Content & Authority (Months 4–9)
We launched a content strategy targeting high-intent plumbing keywords — drain cleaning, water heater replacement, slab leak repair, repiping — in every service area. We built citations, earned backlinks, and maintained a consistent GBP posting schedule.
Phase 3: Expansion (Months 10–15)
With the foundation set, we expanded into adjacent keywords and service areas. New content targeting commercial plumbing, emergency services, and seasonal campaigns. Optimization of top-performing pages to push them from page 2 to page 1.
The Results
- 200% organic traffic growth over 15 months
- Average position moved from 40 to 16 — from page 4 to the top of page 2, with multiple page-1 positions
- Organic leads now account for roughly a third of their total leads — a channel that didn’t exist 15 months ago
- PPC spend was reduced by 20% while total lead volume stayed flat — organic picked up the slack
The Compound Effect
Here’s the part most contractors miss: every month that organic channel grows, the gap between you and your “ads-only” competitor widens. You’re building equity in your website. They’re renting attention. In 12 more months, this plumbing company’s organic traffic will be worth even more — and their competitors will still be paying for every click.
