Artificial intelligence is changing the way homeowners find contractors. And if you’re an HVAC, plumbing, electrical, or roofing contractor, this shift is happening whether you’re ready for it or not.
The good news? Most of your competitors have no idea what’s coming. Which means right now, you have a massive first-mover advantage if you act.
This is everything you need to know about AI search, what’s fact versus fiction, and exactly what to do to make sure your business gets recommended when homeowners ask AI who to hire.
Separating Fact From Fiction: Is AI Really Replacing Google?
Let’s start with the question everyone is asking.
The short answer: No. Not yet. And probably not in the way most people think.
Here’s what the data actually shows.
A study tracking 332 million searches across 130,000 Google users over 20 months found that 99.8% of AI tool users also use traditional search engines. People aren’t replacing Google with AI. They’re using both – for different purposes.
Think about how you personally search for things:
- When you have a how-to question, you might ask ChatGPT or watch a YouTube video
- When you want to compare options, read reviews, or make a purchasing decision, you go to Google
Homeowners are doing the same thing. And for local contractor searches, Google is still dominant.
A study of 425 homeowners who made large home service purchases found:
- Google was the #1 source for finding a contractor
- Previously used contractors came in at #2 (36%)
- Word of mouth and referrals came in at #3 (29%)
- AI search tools like ChatGPT accounted for less than 3% of decisions
So is AI search a threat to Google? Not right now. But is it growing? Absolutely. And the contractors who optimize for it today will have a significant advantage as it continues to mature.
Why AI Search Is Different From Google
Understanding why AI search works differently is critical to knowing how to optimize for it.
Google has spent 25+ years building an infrastructure for local search. Google Business Profiles, reviews, real-time business data, maps integration – it’s all connected and constantly updated.
AI tools like ChatGPT don’t have that infrastructure. They pull from third-party data sources, directories, and websites. And that data is often outdated.
Here’s a real example: a marketing professional asked ChatGPT for restaurant recommendations while in Las Vegas. Of the three options it gave, two were permanently closed. ChatGPT had no way of knowing because it doesn’t have a live reviews system or real-time business data.
This is why Google is still king for local search. And it’s why your Google Business Profile remains your most important local marketing asset.
Unlike Google, AI search is a probability engine, not a ranking system. A study tracking 600 volunteers who ran the same 12 prompts 2,961 times found less than a one in 100 chance of getting the same list of businesses twice. The goal is not to rank number one. The goal is to show up at all. Data from Searchlight’s data-driven trades Substack tracking over a thousand contractor companies found that less than 0.5% of revenue opportunity currently comes through ChatGPT, but that number is growing.
But here’s the thing about AI search: it IS being used for awareness and consideration stage research. Homeowners are asking AI questions like:
- “How often should I service my HVAC system?”
- “What causes a water heater to stop working?”
- “How do I know if I need to replace my furnace?”
And when AI answers those questions, it sometimes recommends businesses. That’s where the opportunity lies.
Where AI Search Actually Pulls Contractor Recommendations From
This is the part most contractors – and most marketing agencies – don’t know.
After analyzing data across hundreds of contractor clients in multiple markets, here are the top sources AI tools pull from when recommending local contractors:
- Angie (formerly Angie’s List)
- Better Business Bureau (BBB)
- Yelp
- Bing Places
- Niche directories like bestprosintown.com, BuildZoom, and trade-specific directories
- Forbes and other authority sites with “top 10” contractor lists
- Reddit threads with local contractor recommendations
- Facebook group discussions
Notice what’s NOT on that list: Google reviews.
ChatGPT cannot read Google reviews. So while your 200 five-star Google reviews are incredibly valuable for Google search and conversions, they do nothing for your AI search visibility.
This means you need a multi-platform reputation strategy, not just a Google-focused one.

AI Search Optimization Checklist for Home Service Contractors
Here’s exactly what to do to improve your visibility in AI search results:
1. Get Listed on the Right Directories
Start by doing your own research. Log out of your personal ChatGPT account (important – if you’re logged in, it will remember your preferences and skew results). Then search for things like:
- “Best HVAC contractor in [your city]”
- “Most reliable plumber in [your area]”
- “Who should I hire for electrical work in [your market]”
Scroll to the bottom of the results and click “Sources.” This will show you exactly which websites AI is pulling from in your market. Make a list of every directory or site that appears and get your business listed on each one.
Most of these listings are free. Some may have a paywall. But even a basic free listing creates a backlink and puts your business in the data pool that AI tools are pulling from.
2. Build Reviews Across Multiple Platforms
Stop focusing exclusively on Google reviews. Start spreading your review presence across:
- Google (still critical for Google search)
- Better Business Bureau
- Yelp (yes, even if you don’t love them)
- Nextdoor
A practical approach: when a customer leaves you a Google review, send them a follow-up message with the text of their review already written out and ask if they’d mind copying it to one other platform. Make it as easy as possible for them.
3. Engage in Reddit and Local Facebook Groups
AI tools are paying significant money for access to real human conversation data. Reddit and Facebook groups are goldmines of that data.
When someone in a local Reddit community asks “who’s the best HVAC contractor in [city]?” and your business gets recommended in the comments, that data gets indexed and used by AI tools.
Set up a simple automation using Zapier to monitor relevant Reddit communities for keywords like “HVAC,” “plumber,” “electrician,” and your city name. Every time those keywords appear, you get an email notification with a link so you can engage immediately.
For Facebook groups, join every local group in every city you serve. Engage genuinely. Answer questions. Be the expert. Don’t sell – just help. Over time, your name becomes the one people recommend when someone asks for a contractor.
4. Optimize Your Bing Places Listing
ChatGPT is connected to Bing. If your Bing Places listing is outdated or incomplete, you’re invisible to ChatGPT for local searches.
The good news: you can sync your Google Business Profile updates directly to Bing. Go to Bing Places and look for the sync option. It takes about five minutes and ensures your information is consistent across both platforms.
5. Create Content That Answers Homeowner Questions
AI tools are trained on content from across the web. If your website has helpful, authoritative content that answers the questions homeowners are asking, you’re more likely to be referenced or recommended.
Think about the questions your technicians get asked on every job. Turn those into blog posts, FAQ pages, and video content. Use tools like AlsoAsked.com to find the exact questions homeowners are searching for in your market.
One page per service. One page per city you serve. Unique, helpful content on every page. This is what builds authority with both Google and AI search tools.
Your Google Business Profile Still Matters More Than Ever
Even in a world where AI search is growing, your Google Business Profile remains your single most important local marketing asset. Here’s what to focus on:
Primary Category
This is the number one ranking factor. And it should change with the seasons.
- Heating season: “Furnace Repair Service” or “Heating Equipment System Supplier”
- Cooling season: “Air Conditioning Repair Service” or “Air Conditioning Contractor”
Make sure the page your GBP links to matches your primary category. If your primary category is “Furnace Repair Service,” link to your furnace repair page, not your homepage.
Business Name
Adding a relevant keyword to your business name is still one of the highest-impact changes you can make. Get a DBA (Doing Business As) certificate from your state to protect yourself if Google questions the change.
Physical Location
Three of the top ten local SEO ranking factors relate to your physical location. If your office is outside the city limits of the area you want to rank in, you’re working against the algorithm. Even a small 100 square foot office with a desk and a vinyl sign on the door can dramatically improve your rankings.
Connect Your Social Media Profiles
Google is now indexing content from Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and LinkedIn. Connect your social media profiles to your Google Business Profile so Google can read that content and build a more complete picture of your business.
Reviews
Getting reviews needs to be a relentless, systematic focus. The contractors winning right now are asking on every job, automating the follow-up, and personalizing the request.
Personalization matters more than most people realize. A review request that includes the customer’s name, references the specific job you did, and feels like it came from a real person converts dramatically better than a generic automated message.
The Local Search Ecosystem in 2026
Understanding where all the pieces fit together helps you prioritize where to spend your time and money.
- Website/Organic SEO – Still important for authority building and AI visibility. One page per service, one page per city, unique helpful content throughout.
- Google Business Profile – Your most important local asset. Optimize it, keep it updated, and get reviews consistently.
- Apple Maps – There are 125 million iPhones in the US. Many users use Apple Maps natively instead of Google Maps. Make sure your Apple Maps listing is accurate and complete.
- Bing Places – Connected to ChatGPT. Keep it updated and synced with your Google Business Profile.
- Yelp – Love it or hate it, Yelp data feeds into Apple Maps, ChatGPT, and Bing. Have an updated listing and get reviews there if you can.
- Social Media – Facebook, Instagram, and other platforms are being indexed by Google. Your social presence contributes to your overall authority and visibility.
- Reddit and Nextdoor – Real human conversations that AI tools are actively learning from. Be present and helpful in these communities.
Why Pricing Transparency on Your Website Wins More Jobs
Here’s a stat that should get your attention: 69% of homeowners searched for pricing online before making a hiring decision, but only 15% found information clear enough to get a rough idea of cost.
That’s a massive gap. And it’s an opportunity.
Most contractors have been told by coaches and consultants to never put pricing on their website. The problem is homeowners want that information. And if your competitors provide it and you don’t, they win the consideration stage before you even get a chance to compete.
You don’t have to publish exact prices. But you should:
- Provide price ranges for common services
- Explain what factors affect the cost
- Describe what your technician will need to assess to give an accurate estimate
- Educate homeowners on what goes into the job
This builds trust, reduces friction in your sales process, and positions you as the transparent, honest contractor in your market.
Google is also pushing this direction. They’re testing “online estimates” features directly in search results and have a button on Google Business Profiles that uses AI to call businesses and ask for pricing. The businesses that answer and provide information show up at the top. The ones that don’t get pushed to the bottom.
What to Do Right Now
If you take nothing else from this, focus on these five actions:
1. Search for yourself in AI tools. Log out of ChatGPT and search for your service in your city. See what comes up. Note which directories and sites are being referenced. Get listed on every one of them.
2. Spread your reviews beyond Google. Start getting reviews on BBB, Facebook, and Yelp. AI tools can’t read your Google reviews.
3. Engage in local Reddit and Facebook communities. Set up keyword monitoring so you never miss a conversation where you can add value and get your name out there.
4. Update your Bing Places listing. Sync it with your Google Business Profile. It takes five minutes and connects you to ChatGPT’s local data.
5. Add pricing information to your website. Even ranges and explanations of what affects cost will set you apart from competitors and reduce friction in your sales process.
The Bottom Line
AI search is not replacing Google. Not today. But it is growing. And the contractors who build their presence across multiple platforms, engage in real community conversations, and create genuinely helpful content will be the ones AI recommends when homeowners ask.
The opportunity is real. The window to get ahead of your competitors is open right now. But it won’t stay open forever.
The contractors who act today will own their markets tomorrow.
