AI tools influence contractor recommendations

When a homeowner needs a plumber, an electrician, or an HVAC company, they have more ways to search than ever. Alongside a normal Google search, more people are asking AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude questions like “who’s a reliable plumber near me” or “best HVAC company in [city].”

This is a real referral channel now, and more contractors are starting to pay attention to how they show up in AI search results. It works differently than you might think.

These AI platforms don’t pull answers out of thin air. They cite sources, specific websites they trust enough to reference by name. If your business isn’t showing up on the sites these tools already pull from, it doesn’t matter how good your reviews are or how nice your website looks. You’re not in the conversation.

This is the exact problem we set out to solve for our home service clients. Here’s how we did it.

What AI Visibility Actually Means for Home Service Contractors

Traditional SEO is about ranking on Google. AI visibility is a different game.

It’s about whether AI platforms mention your business, or mention a source that lists your business, when someone asks a question related to your trade and your area.

The hard part is that AI platforms don’t publish a list of “here’s who we trust.” You have to figure that out by watching what they actually do.

How We Found the Directories AI Platforms Actually Cite

Instead of guessing, we went straight to the source. Starting in late 2025, we ran searches across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude covering 161 different markets across the US and 111 different keyword variations, spanning HVAC, plumbing, and electrical trades. We documented every website these platforms cited in their answers.

One thing stood out fast: the platforms don’t all favor the same sources. A directory that ChatGPT cited often wasn’t always one Gemini or Claude leaned on. This kind of shift isn’t unique to home services either. Citation behavior across AI platforms changes over time and varies by industry. In one analysis by Profound, an AI search research firm, LinkedIn moved from the 11th to the 5th most-cited source in ChatGPT’s results in just a few months.  If citation rankings can shift that much for a platform like LinkedIn, the same kind of movement is happening in the home service space too.

From there, we looked for patterns: which websites kept showing up, over and over, across different cities and trades. Those repeat appearances told us something. These aren’t random citations. They’re sources AI platforms consistently treat as credible references for local service businesses.

We call these citation directories. They come in a few types:

  • “Best of” style roundup websites
  • Industry-specific directories built for trades and contractors
  • Geographic or local business directories
  • General business listing sites

The common thread: they list businesses in a structured, methodical way. That structure is likely why AI platforms find them easy to reference.

Not Every Directory Makes the Cut

Once we had a working list of sources that AI platforms cite, we didn’t stop there. Every source goes through a vetting process before we recommend it to a client. A source only makes our list if it meets all of these:

  • It’s free to submit to. We’re not interested in pay-to-play directories that charge for a listing. That said, if we find a paid directory that’s genuinely worth the investment, like the Chamber of Commerce or the BBB, we’ll still bring that opportunity to a client’s attention. It just won’t be part of this free-submission list.
  • It’s at least broadly relevant to home service trades.  We’re not filtering for a perfect trade-specific match. We’re filtering out directories that have nothing to do with the industries we work in.
  • There’s a clear, legitimate submission path. No shady forms, no dead ends, no sketchy data requests.

We also disqualify sources that are spammy, hidden behind a paywall, missing a real submission process, or clearly unrelated to the trades we work with. The goal isn’t a giant list for the sake of having one. It’s a curated list of directories that are actually worth a client’s time.

Why AI Search Visibility Matters for Your Business

Think of this the same way you’d think about being listed with the right trade associations or the right local review sites, except the audience is now an AI platform instead of a person browsing directly.

When your business is properly submitted to the directories AI platforms already cite, you increase your odds of being part of the answer when a potential customer asks an AI assistant for a recommendation.

This isn’t a replacement for the fundamentals. You still need a strong website, real reviews, solid local SEO, and an accurate, well-maintained Google Business Profile. It’s an added layer, built for how people are starting to search in 2026 and beyond.

This Isn’t a “Set It and Forget It” Fix

No one, including the AI platforms themselves, has fully settled how AI search and citation behavior will evolve. Google has changed its SEO approach many times over the years. There’s no reason to expect AI platforms to be any different.

That’s exactly why we treat this as an ongoing process, not a one-time project. We keep monitoring what these platforms cite, re-vet our source list as it grows, and adjust as the landscape shifts. We’d rather be upfront about that than sell you on a tactic that stops working the moment a platform changes course.

Getting Your Home Service Business Into AI Search Results

AI platforms are becoming a real referral channel for home service businesses. Right now, most contractors have no idea whether they even show up in that conversation.

Our approach is built to find where AI platforms are already looking, get your business properly and legitimately listed in those places, and keep adjusting as the space evolves.

If you’re curious where your business currently stands in AI search results, that’s worth a conversation as part of your broader digital marketing strategy.

FAQ

What is AI visibility for a home service business? AI visibility means showing up when someone asks an AI platform like ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude a question about your trade and your area. It’s different from ranking on Google. It’s about whether the AI mentions your business or a source that lists it.

How do AI platforms decide which contractors to recommend? AI platforms cite specific websites they trust, often directories, roundup sites, and local listing pages. If your business is listed on the sites a platform already pulls from, you have a better chance of being part of the answer.

Is AI search citation the same thing as SEO? No. SEO is about ranking on Google’s search results. AI citation is about whether AI platforms mention or reference your business when generating an answer. The two overlap, but AI visibility depends heavily on directory listings and consistent business information, not just website rankings.

How do I know if my business shows up in AI search results? The only reliable way is to run test searches across platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude and see what comes up. If you’re not sure where you stand, that’s a good starting point for a conversation with a marketing partner who tracks this.
