If you’re already comfortable using one of the tools listed below, we recommend going with that. Otherwise, you can use any of the following options to find your list of backlinks. Below, learn how to find bad backlinks using Google Search Console, Semrush, Moz Link Explorer, and Ahrefs.

Google Search Console

With Google Search Console, you can view a complete list of every site linking to yours. You won’t be able to see which websites are toxic, so you will need to sort through the information manually using the factors above to decide which links are good or bad. 

To use Google Search Console, follow these steps:

  1. Sign into your Google Search Console account
  2. Click on “Links” in the left sidebar
  3. Click on “More” beneath the section that says “Top Linking Sites”
  4. You’ll find your total number of external links
  5. Click “EXPORT” to retrieve the data
  6. Begin sorting through the data

Semrush

If you don’t want to rely on Semrush’s algorithm, you can use in-depth filters to sort your links by toxic markers, anchor text, authority scores, link type, and much more to make the manual sorting process much easier. 

To locate bad backlinks using Semrush, follow these steps:

  1. Visit Semrush’s Backlink Audit tool
  2. Paste in your website’s domain and click “Start Backlink Audit”
  3. Follow the prompting instructions 
  4. View your “Overview” report
  5. Add your Google Analytics or Google Search Console accounts by clicking “Integrations”
  6. Click on “Audit” to view your report
  7. Review toxic links using Semrush’s in-depth scoring features
  8. Add toxic links to your “remove” list

You may disavow links directly from Semrush using the tool’s convenient contact option. We will discuss disavowing a bit more below, but Semrush essentially allows you to add links to a folder where you will collect email addresses. Moz Link Explorer

Moz Link Explorer offers a similar level of insights, reporting, and SEO tools as Semrush. You can view detailed information regarding your website’s linking health, spam score metrics, and a full backlink profile. You’ll also be able to analyze toxicity score metrics on each backlink, helping you easily narrow down the culprits on your website’s poor rankings. 

Here’s how you can use Moz Link Explorer to find bad backlinks on your website:

  1. Visit the Moz Link Explorer tool
  2. Click on “Inbound Links” in the lefthand menu
  3. Enter your domain or the link to the page you’d like to analyze 
  4. Set the link type to “follow” and the status to “active”
  5. Click the “Export” button
  6. Download your data or view it in the browser to analyze your links

Ahrefs

Like Semrush, Ahrefs offers comprehensive backlink analytics with a convenient disavow tool so you can complete everything you need in one place. Ahrefs updates its live database frequently for the most extensive view into your website’s link health. With Ahrefs, you can filter backlinks by anchor text, domain rating, and more. 

To use Ahrefs for finding bad backlinks, follow these steps:

  1. Visit Ahrefs’ Backlink Checker tool
  2. Enter your website’s URL and click “Check”
  3. Scroll down until you find the “Backlinks” section
  4. Sort your backlinks by toxicity by clicking on the “Toxic Score” column
  5. Review the backlinks with the highest scores

How To Remove Bad Backlinks

Reach Out to the Website Owner

The first way you can attempt to remove a toxic backlink is by kindly reaching out to the website owner, asking them to remove their link to your website. Semrush can help you quickly aggregate email addresses and send bulk messages to all of your toxic link website owners. 

You can often find the email address by visiting the website and viewing their contact information. Your message will need to include a few details, like where the backlink is on their website and why you would like them to remove it. Keep your message kind, concise, and professional. 

Disavow Links to Your Site

In many cases, busy website owners will not respond to or comply with your message. In this scenario, you will need to take matters into your own hands. Thankfully, you can disavow links to your website Google’s Disavow Tool. 

By submitting a disavow file, you’re informing Google that you don’t want the search engine to continue considering the link when crawling your website. You must use this tool as a last resort and with caution, as disavowing the wrong links to your website can negatively impact your SEO rankings.

To disavow links to your website, follow these steps:

  1. Log into the same Gmail account that you used to verify your domain when using Google Search Console
  2. Visit https://www.google.com/webmaster/tools/disavow-links-=ain
  3. Select your domain property (either http or https)
  4. Click replace, then upload your disavow file from Ahrefs or another tool
